If I can't get my wife or stepson to hold the bike upright for me, I put a brick under the kickstand. One standard size red brick, laying flat on its wider side, is just about right. The width of the brick is sufficient where you don't need to be concerned about the kickstand slipping off. It also makes a good base for parking the bike in the front yard after a rain.
